BLAKE NZ-VR comes to Owairaka

On Friday last week we went to a BLAKE NZ-VR session to learn more about the threats to the oceans around NZ. During the session, we all got to wear a Virtual Reality headset and experience what it would be like to dive in different parts of the Hauraki Gulf. Unfortunately many places around the Gulf have been over fished and are now very unhealthy.
We had a great discussion about what causes damage to our oceans and then about ways we can help protect the Hauraki Gulf. Did you know that less than 1% of our marine environments are protected!

What ideas do you have to help stop over fishing and polluting the Hauraki Gulf?

  1. I think that we could have more protected areas, also maybe we could have more restrictions on how much sea food we can catch.

    1. Also we could inform more people to always put rubbish in the bin by showing people before and afters of polluted places.

  2. Hi room 25 im Hiero from room 25 i think we could stop over fishing by not catching baby fish or fish that are to big and if your a family of 3 or 4 only catch one big fish or if you are a big family only catch 2 fish or just catch some medium fish and we can stop pollution by Making more marine reserves and stop throwing bad things into the sea like plastic and tires and to stop boat engines Leaking and to NEVER put bad chemicals in the sea.

  3. i think that we should put signs up in every street saying 'MAKE SURE TO PUT RUBBISH IN BINS!". And to stop overfishing i think that people have a limit of five fish a day.

My name is Mariam from Room 25.
IF I was in charge of the whole world I would say If you take food to the sea or beach Pick up the rubbish that is your's and use less plastic. We can make a difference so if everyone picked up 1 piece of rubbish a day that would be around 7,000.And remember only rain goes down the drain.

I had a great time because I got to see fish and I got to see hammer head sharks and I got to see sting rays and at the end a big sting ray came up and it gave me a high five. Stop fishing as much!

  6. Kia Ora Room 25! Abdi here from room 25. Some ideas to help over fishing and polluting are Making a rubbish free day and a day to pick up rubbish around the school. Another idea is to decrease the limit of fishing to around 10 fish. We could also Spread the message around in posters, videos and more.

  7. Kia ora Room 25. Poppy here and here are my ideas to help save the planet!

1 We should not fish so much and put a limit to how much fish we can catch.
2 Reuse our plastic as much as we can and don't chuck it out.
    3 Maybe don't litter?
4 try and not buy so much plastic!
    5 spread the word!

Thank you for reading and if you want YOU can spread the word! Just think about it, every piece of plastic you drop, YOU just killed a sea creature.😕

When you fish think about if your going to eat all that fish throw the rest that you will not eat back in the water if there still alive.
People need to build more bins so people don't thrown there rubbish randomly.

My name is Isabella-Charis from Room 25.I loved our VR session it was very fun and it felt like I was there with the sea animals and it was scary when we were all in the deep blue sea.
My idea is that we can put up a chart and have a amount of how many fish we can get, or you could be a vegetarian for one day and the next meat day.
    Thank you for sharing!!!

  10. Hello Room 25 Rita L here!
when we did our VR we looked at the hauraki golf
my ways to stop over fishing and pollution in the hauraki golf: to stop pollution we need to know what is coursing the pollution for e.g plastic or wast water and know we now what is coursing it we could stop buying plastic bags and bring reusable bag and to stop the wast water make sure it goes to the WWP (wast water plant). for over fishing we could make the 20 fish a day rule into either 1/2/3 a day

  12. Hellooooooo! Charlotte here from room 25!
My ideas to help stop over fishing and pollution the Hauraki Gulf are to lower The amount of fish you can catch depending on the amount of people you are giving fish to eat. And to stop Pollution You can tell people on adds to buy less plastic and try to make sure that the waste water go's to the WWP ( Waste Water Plant )!
    Thanks for reading my comment!
    Bye!
